Brazil genuine favourites to lift the trophy
The stage is set and only a day remains for the inaugural of the greatest show on earth FIFA World Cup in Russia. In the latest of this series ahead of the World Cup in Russia, we will analyze the chances and potential of five-time champions Brazil.
Brazil are undoubtedly the most successful team in the World Cup history by winning the trophy more than any other nation (5 times). Germany and Italy are their closest competitor by winning the 4 times. This year Brazil have a genuine chance to win the cup for the sixth time. On paper, the current Brazilian squad is the strongest than any other nation in this year’s tourney, as they have 2-3 world class players in every position. In goal-keeping position they have Roma goalkeeper Alisson, who definitely is a prospect of becoming the best goalkeeper in the world. In defense, presence of leaders like Thiago Silva, Miranda, Marcelo makes them a compact team. Brazil's greatest quality is the fact the team doesn't rely on Neymar as heavily as in the 2014 World Cup, when its game depended on the player's individual moves.
Surely Neymar is important -- he is the key player -- but today, the group surpasses the individual.
This change became clear from the moment Tite took over the national team. With a new coach and a new game, Neymar was given more freedom to play and the team became an actual team.
The mixture has resulted in something interesting. There are familiar faces (Silva and Marcelo), new assets (Casemiro and Fred) and athletes who have emerged across the European soccer scene (Coutinho, Jesus and Firmino). This is a team that knows how to pass the ball, how to attack and also how to defend and Neymar is the cherry on top.
All the spotlights will still be fixed on Neymar. His recent performances against Croatia and Austria, after returning from injury, makes Brazil a more complete team and Neymar will still be the key if Brazil are to lift the cup in mid July. It is now redemption time for Neymar and co. after the 7-1 humiliation against Germany at home soil during 2014 World Cup, and this Brazilian team is more than good enough to give their fans record sixth World Cup title after 15 long years.
