11 killed in Rangamati landslides
At least 11 people were killed in four separate landslides at Naniarchar upazila of Rangamati district in Chattogram on Monday night.
The landslides were triggered by heavy rainfall in Rangamati since last couple of days, local and divisional administration sources told BSS.
Rangamati Deputy Commissioner AKM Mamunur Rashid told BSS that the major landslides took place at Boro Kul Para, Hati Mara, Siyalli Para and Dharmacharan Karbari para at Naniarchar upazila in early today that triggered by nonstop rain since Sunday.
Among the 11 deceased, four belonged to two families in Boro Kul Para area, three of the same family from Hati Mara Dharmacharan Karbari neighborhood, three Siyalli Para and one in Gilachhari. The deceased in Boro Kul Para were identified as Surendra Lal Chakma, 52, his wife Razzo Debi Chakma, 44, and their daughter Sonali Chakma, 10, and their neighbor boy Rumen Chakma, 15.
The victims of Hati Mara were area as Rita Chakma, 28 and Riten Chakma, 26. The victims of Siyalli Para were Fulo Debi Chakma, 31, Eti Chakma, 24 and a two-month-old baby Joti Chakma.
Another deceased of Gilachhari para could not be identified, the DC added.
Abdullah Al Mamun, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Naniarchar and Hasan Bin Mohammad Ali staff officer of divisional commissioner of Chattogram confirmed the death toll in the landslides and casualties.
On this day last year, a landslide had struck Rangamati killing over 120 people while none of them were in Naniarchar.
